Steps of Skin Care

We all know that skin care is not 1 minute activity as many people think. It requires a step by step process and each step must be followed properly for powerful impact. I can only talk about the steps i follow in my skin care routine.

  • Cleansing
    • First step specially in the night after spending whole day outside or in any case before going to bed, cleaning is a must. I prefer to go for oil cleaning instead of using chemical filled soaps. I do use soap if i am in extreme hurry and there is no other option.
  • Exfoliation
    • I do this not on daily basis but generally twice a week as it makes my skin feel alive but over doing can cause the breakouts and makes the skin extremely dry.
  • Hydrating
    • A must step after cleaning or exfoliating depending on the situation but hydrating my skin is a must for me. I do this every day at least twice both in the morning and before going to bed.
  • Toning
    • Skin toning helps to balance your skin’s pH levels and tighten pores, creating a smoother, more even complexion. Specially after Turing 30, i started using toners almost on daily basis. This has really helped my skin not to loose bounce and its still looks much younger than its actual age.
  • Nourishment
    • I regularly apply serums and creams enriched with plant-derived vitamins such as C and E to nourish my skin. These nutrients help protect, repair, and rejuvenate your skin, keeping it healthy and radiant. Generally, my hydration needs are covered by using aloe vera and green tea extract.

Oil cleansing is a method of using natural oils to clean the skin instead of chemical-filled soap-based cleansers. This is gentle on the skin and helps in maintaining the natural moisture of the skin, it also helps in effectively removing the makeup. Natural oils don’t remove the moisture from the skin and help in keeping it moist.

I have a mixed skin type so I generally alter jojoba and castor oils in my cleaning process. I tried coconut and olive oil but I ended up with a few pimples so I have stopped using those. So please select oil based on your skin type. If you can’t identify it, I would suggest that ask around in shops and most of the shops will be able to give you samples or ask your friends, someone might have the oil you want to try. Buy a big bottle only after you know the oil that will suit your skin type. It’s not just about dollars and cents, it’s also about sustainable living as the less we buy, the more sustainably we are living.

How to Cleanse Step-by-step guide

  • Apply oil to dry face with clean hands
  • Gently massage for 1-2 minutes
  • Steam face with a warm, damp cloth for 30 seconds
  • Wipe off the oil with the cloth
  • Repeat if necessary for makeup removal
Natural Oils

You should start with just a few drops of oil and do it once a day, preferably in the evening. Also, remember to choose the oil based on your skin type. My recommendation is that for dry skin olive oil or avocado oil suits best while for oily skin jojoba oil and a blend with castor oil suits best. Just ensure that as castor oil is a bit sticky you steam your face and wipe it completely to remove any oil from your face. For sensitive skin, I would recommend using sweet almond oil or sunflower seed oil.

Its also possible that sometimes you might get a little purging but if you clean your face post-oiling clearly and avoid any dust on your skin, it will get adjusted within a few days.

Oiling also helps in deep moisturizing skin without clogging pores as you are steaming and wiping all the oil off. It also helps in the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. It also works wonders as makeup removal (I have even removed my Mac 24-hour Matt lipstick with oiling and it worked like magic).

Exfoliation with Natural Ingredients

Exfoliation is a key step in my skincare routine, I do this almost twice a week. It helps to remove dead skin cells, open up my pores, and reveal a smoother complexion. Most of the off-the-shelf products contain harsh chemicals which are ok to use occasionally but are quite harmful if used for longer periods. Natural exfoliants offer a gentler, more eco-friendly alternative that’s just as effective.

I prefer to use sugar any type whichever is available at the moment in my kitchen. Both white or brown sugar granules work wonderfully to slough off dead skin cells without irritating them. Sugar is a natural source of glycolic acid that penetrates the skin to break down the bonds between dead skin cells. Mixing sugar with a bit of honey or olive oil can create a nourishing scrub that leaves your skin feeling soft and refreshed.

Exfoliation with natural ingredients

Another option I do use if I have some leisure time is oatmeal, It is especially good for sensitive skin. Finely ground oats gently exfoliate while providing anti-inflammatory benefits. A simple oatmeal scrub can be made by combining ground oats with yogurt or water to form a paste, which can then be massaged onto the skin in circular motions.

Coffee grounds are also a fantastic natural exfoliant. The coarse texture of coffee grounds makes them perfect for sloughing off dead skin cells and stimulating blood flow, which can help to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Additionally, coffee contains antioxidants that can help to protect the skin from free radical damage. To make a coffee scrub, mix used coffee grounds with coconut oil and a few drops of your favorite essential oil for an invigorating, skin-smoothing treatment. Though I am yet to try coffee-based but several of my friends swear by it as they have been using it for a long time.

Fruit enzymes, such as those found in papaya and pineapple, offer another natural exfoliation option. Fruits gently dissolve dead skin cells without the need for physical scrubbing. I use them quite often, especially while packing kid’s lunch boxes. Pack the good part of the fruit in their lunch box and the remaining goes to my face. I use these fruits not only as exfoliants but also as massage creams, masks, etc. I know it sounds weird but it does work wonders on my skin.

I have seen both my mother and grandmother using this for the past several years and you should have seen my grandmother’s skin. She passed away at the age of 94 and still her skin looked like around 65-70 years old without many creases and the only thing she used to do was apply any leftover fruits on her face and neck. If I get 70% of her skin magic, I will consider myself lucky.

Its extremely easy to grow aloe vera at home, you can easily grow it in to any pot in a balcony also. You don’t need any big garden or lot of ingredients for it. It just need plenty of sun light and water and once in a while just pull out the weeds like other plants. If you don’t want to grow, pluck and peel, you can always buy from Amazon.
