I enjoy hosting parties, but I’m not too fond of the waste they create. That is why I have dedicated myself to using sustainable party ideas for all my festivities, whether informal get-togethers with family and friends, children’s birthday parties, or even our wedding anniversary celebrations.
When I initially thought about organizing a sustainable party, I felt overwhelmed and confused where to begin. My journey began with my first sustainable party in January 2020, shortly before the COVID-19 lockdown. I had to figure out where to source sustainable party materials, how to host a zero-waste event, and how to keep everything within budget. It was quite daunting but eventually i was able to do it.
You do not have to worry about performing all the hard lifting yourself. Before you begin preparing, I have plenty of ideas, suggestions to help you throw an unforgettable zero-waste event.

The most crucial feature of any party is that it is enjoyable and entertaining for adults and children, with good food. At my parties, I also ensure to serve lot of tasty, flavorful selection of vegetarian foods just a small contribution towards my sustainability goal.
If you’re arranging a party, I would really request you to read this post. This will help you to make make your party both enjoyable and environmentally friendly. Sustainable parties not only benefit the environment but also encourage your guests to follow eco-friendly practices. These can be the good place to start the sustainability conversation with both kids and adults. I started my sustainability journey with my younger one when she was around 5 and she is now an important part of almost all my sustainability related decisions.
Here are ten innovative and sustainable party ideas to help you throw a memorable and green celebration.
Sustainable Party: Choose Eco-Friendly Invitations
I’m not great at being spontaneous, so I prefer to know in advance how many people will be attending. This allows me to plan properly for seating, entertainment, food, and gifts, ensuring everything runs smoothly and waste is minimized. For kid’s parties, sending out invitations is crucial because it helps clarify important details. For example, I need to specify whether the invitation is for kids only, kids and their mothers, kids and parents, or the whole family. I also need to include start and end times and any additional details, like pick-up and drop-off arrangements if applicable.

Over the past few years, I have relied on two specific methods for managing my party invitations, and these have helped make my parties both successful and sustainable.
No Waste Digital Invitations
Using digital invitations through platforms like Evite or Paperless Post has been incredibly effective. These platforms allow me to track RSVPs easily, reducing the guesswork involved in planning. Additionally, they save paper and postage, aligning with my commitment to sustainability. I prefer using WhatsApp over other means. You can design your own beautiful digital invitations using Canva. This is an awesome platform to design any invitation or thankyou notes or anything you might need.
Reusable and Sustainable Paper Invitations

For more formal or significant events, I sometimes opt for physical invitations made from eco-friendly materials. Seed paper invites are a favorite because they can be planted after the event, leaving no waste behind. These invitations are not only beautiful but also a great conversation starter about sustainability.
Sustainable Party: Eco-Friendly Party Decorations
You can very well skip the single-use or even reusable plastic decoration items as eventually these will end up in landfills and increase pollution. Instead of these items, I prefer to decorate my venue with natural sustainable decorations like leaves, flowers, or even something with clothes which won’t harm our planet.
Natural Decorations
Use flowers, leaves, and other natural elements as decorations. They add beauty and can be composted afterward. You can make beautiful decor from leaves and flowers and even kids would love to help you in that. Let the imagination run wild and you will get beautiful decor in no time.

Using Food As Decorations
You can use colorful veggies and fruit, snacks, candies and more food item to decorate the venue. You can set up multiple corners with different types of food, It will also help in reducing the crowd in one place.

Sustainable Party: Remove All Disposable Cutlery
Disposable cutlery is always the main cause of trash generated in a party. I recognize that the cleanup procedure can be overwhelming, and the prospect of washing dishes can be terrifying. However, there are solutions that will allow you to avoid this difficulty while still holding a sustainable and eco-friendly event.
Compostable Plates and Utensils
I always opt for compostable or biodegradable tableware made from materials like bamboo or cornstarch. For me this is the best option as i can’t imagine doing so many loads of dishes after a huge party and as these are biodegradable, they straight go to my composting unit. Its a definite win-win for me. I generally go one step ahead and keep my bin beautifully decorated with leaves or flowers and encourage guests to put the disposable in appropriate bins, like food goes in one while disposables goes in other ones.
I have bought this “250 Piece Compostable Paper Plates Set with Extra Long Utensils” set multiple times from amazon for almost all my parties. It cost around 29.90$ for a piece of 250 items which includes “50pcs 9″ paper plates, 50pcs 7″ dessert plates, 50pcs 6.7″ forks, 50pcs 6.7″ knives and 50pcs 6.3″ spoons”. For me, i feel the price is justifiable as it helps the environment and when we are spending so much on the party and other accessories why to be stingy on this item alone.
I generally order 2 sets for a party of 50 guests. There are two options available but i prefer to go with Brown as its not bleached and more sustainable and fit for composting.

- 100% Sugarcane Compostable & Biodegradable: The heavy duty paper party plates are made of sugarcane fiber, while knives, forks and spoons are made of cornstarch, these materials are eco-friendly, and no trees were cut down to make these compostable plates.
- Microwave and Refrigerator Safe: The biodegradable plates is oil and leak proof, microwave safe up to 248¡ãF, and can be used to serve hot meals. Forks, knives and spoons are sturdy enough to slice through cooked meat, vegetables and fruit without cracking or splitting!
- I have personally composed this entire cutlery set post party and it got composed in around 6-8 months without any issue in my existing composting setup. Even if you don’t have composting unit, you can look around in your locality and you may be able to find some composting unit near by.
I have written a specific post with details about all kind of biodegradable cutlery, you can check that out for details.
Reusable Plates and Utensils
I can fully understand that its painful to even think of doing dishes after party but if I have a bigger crowd, I opt to call in caterers who comes with there own reusable cutlery. This helps in my sustainable objective and also I don’t need to worry about doing the dishes.
Sustainable Party: Eco-Friendly Goody Bags/Party Favors
This is one of the most frequently asked question in my friend circle. Most of us have kids who loves the birthday parties and a goody bags is a must to have. I used to find it quite challenging to find eco-friendly party favors which are well liked by kids. But slowly i am able to find ways to do. I generally opt for kids to create some art work and they can take that as part of goody bag along with some chocolates and locally baked cookies. Most of the kids and even parents have appreciated these goody bags. I skip the goody bags all together for adult parties or if its a must give, i opt for a small plant in grow bags along with some locally baked good.
I have written a specific post with zero-waste party favors. you can check that out too.

Sustainable Party: Include More Of Green Menu
We all know that having more green vegetables, fruits helps in reducing out carbon footprint on our environment. I am not saying that don’t include any meat items but try your best to have more green options specially for snacks. You can easily replace meat with some flavorful greens like cottage cheese, tofu or baked goods. Its much healthier and better for environment. In my parties i generally keep the ratio of 60:40 where 60% of my food menu is made of greener options.
I would suggest that try all options with in the smaller groups to know there preference. You can change the flavors according to the guests liking. Generally most of the kids love cheese flavors. Once you have mastered the list of items you can mix and match different combinations in various parties.
Sustainable Party: Buy Local
I understand that in today’s times when the entire world is on our finger tips and we all are opting for online shopping as its much easier and cheaper, i would sincerely suggest to try going local. This will also help in reducing the carbon footprint as no fuel is being used in transporting the good to your place or to your country.
I prefer to buy all my food items which are grown locally from local Sunday market. This also helps me to reduce the plastic as i carry my own reusable cloth bags, so i don’t take any plastic bags. I also enjoy talking to local farmers, villagers and seeing there happy faces. Some of the local people have become good friends. There are times when locals took the extra effort to drop the best quality produce directly to my home. This is a lovely gesture and we usually end up spending some quality time together.
Sustainable Party: Be Clear About Gifts
We all know that most of the gifts which we get in parties are of not very useful. Yes, they do look pretty but we and even kids loose interest in them in no time and they just occupy space in the house without being used. So i make it very clear in my invitation that i would appreciate no gifts if its an adult party or get some thing eco-friendly if its a kids party. I don’t even mind telling my close friends what to being if i am aware of there budget, it helps in reducing the clutter and wastage.
I even add a note in my invitation that its an eco-friendly party, so please don’t bring any plastic toys or gifts.
Sustainable Party: Go For Leaf Confetti
We all enjoy confetti because it lends a sense of fun and excitement to any event. To maintain a celebratory atmosphere while remaining environmentally conscious, I’ve begun utilizing colorful leaves as confetti at my celebrations. This easy switch has been a huge success, and no one has noticed the difference. The leaves add a natural, vivid touch to the festivities while minimizing the environmental impact of typical confetti.
If the party is outdoor, i don’t even cut the leaves. just ensure that no hard sticks are around and i just sprinkle the colorful leaves around and kids loves to play in them.

All i need to do is, collect different color leaves and dry them for 2-3 days and punch the holes. I have actually outsourced this work to my younger one and she gets super excited with it and i get my work done. Smart mommy.
Sustainable Party: Sustainable Party Venues
I started having my parties in the afternoon and latest finish by 5.00PM, this helps me in reducing the wastage on additional lighting and heating arrangements and helps towards my sustainability goal. I try my best to opt for outdoor venues if weather permits, but if i have to choose indoor venues, i try my best to look for venues which supports energy efficient lighting and appliances.
Sustainable Party: Don’t be Ashamed to Borrow
Most of the stuff we need for party specially decorations, big serving cutlery, kids toys or several other small things is used once or twice a year, so instead of buying, together with my friends, we came up with an idea and made borrowing very normal. We are planning to go one step ahead and collect our stuff and starting letting others to use it. We plan to advertise it on social media. This really helps in saving cost and making out parties sustainable.
I understand that it will take some time for the idea to fit in the society but i think if we start talking about sustainability with-in small friend circle just to start with, we can make a change.
I have made the change and i am sure you will do that too.
