All-Natural Body Wash: DIY Body Washes Recipes
When I wanted to start living more sustainably, I saw a lot of plastic coming from body wash products. On average most of houses will have at least 4-5 bottles in their bathrooms for various purposes like cleansing, body wash, face wash, shampoo, conditioner, etc. Almost all of these products can be replaced with zero-waste sustainable homemade products that are easy to make and use and good for our skin too.
I could feel the impact of these chemicals on my skin moreover I wanted my kid to have the best in the world, hence I decided to move to all-natural body wash products. By making my own all-natural body wash, I enjoy a luxurious, safe skincare experience while knowing exactly what’s going on with my skin.
If you’re also looking to switch to a more eco-friendly, sustainable, and skin-conscious routine, creating your own all-natural body wash at home is a fantastic place to start. Not only does this allow you to avoid harsh chemicals found in many commercial products, but it also lets you customize your body wash to suit your specific skin needs. Whether you’re aiming for a soothing, moisturizing blend or something refreshing and invigorating, DIY body wash recipes offer endless possibilities. Plus, they’re easy to make with simple, natural ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen.
The first need of any all-natural body wash is that it gets rid of all the dirt, and germs and doesn’t dry out the skin. All my recipes are tried and tested on myself and have been used for several years. I have a close circle of friends with different types of skin and we all have tried all the recipes documented below. I will try my best to provide detailed recipes of all-natural body washes but you can always customize them based on your liking and needs. I will give you a step-by-step process to answer the most common question “How to make all-natural body wash at home?”
Here are seven DIY body wash recipes designed for various skin types. Each recipe includes its specific benefits and a simple step-by-step process on how to make it.
All-Natural Body Wash – Coconut Milk and Honey Body Wash
This is one of the best and easiest body wash for dry and sensitive skin. I do have dry skin but not a sensitive skin but this works well for me too. My daughter has normal skin and she uses this for at least twice a week and it makes her skin very soft.
- Suitable For: Dry and sensitive skin.
- Ingredients:
- 1 cup coconut milk
- 1/3 cup liquid castile soap – I tried “Dr. Bronner’s – Pure-Castile Liquid Soap” few years ago and haven’t bought any other soap after that. Its quite gentle on my skin.
- 1/3 raw honey – I have been using Manukora Raw Manuka Honey from Amazon for all my cooking, baking, skincare products from past several years and have no regrets only praises for this brand.
- 1 tablespoon vitamin E oil – You can get this from any pharmacy or off the shelf. If you can’t get Vitamin E oil, you can just buy some vitamin E capsules and break them.
- Few drops of your preferred essential oil – My favorite brand on Amazon for all essential oils is “Cliganic”. You can try with any of your favorite brand of essential oil.
- Process to Make and Use
- Mix coconut milk, castile soap, honey, and vitamin E oil in a bottle or in a deep stainless-steel bowl.
- Add essential oil drops and shake well or stir well.
- Store in the fridge and use within a month.
- Shake well before each use and apply to a loofah or directly to the skin.
- Benefits
- This all-natural body wash gently removes dead skin cells and dirt without stripping skin’s natural oils.
- Coconut milk hydrates and soothes the skin, while honey acts as a natural humectant, locking in moisture.
- Coconut milk also helps treat dry, dull, and damaged skin and it also nourishes the skin while offering anti-aging benefits to reduce stretch marks and acne.
- Vitamin E oil nourishes and protects the skin, making it soft and smooth.
I try making coconut milk at home either by using raw coconut or by grinding coconut flakes with warm water but at times, I am ok to use any readily available coconut milk.
I use this specially during winter times. Coconut milk has natural oils which make my skin feel moisturized.
There are various ways to make coconut milk, my favorite one is right from one of the YouTube video. I have been doing this from past several years. and its always results in great coconut milk. I use this coconut milk not only in my bathroom products, I use the same coconut milk in my cooking, baking too.
All-Natural Body Wash – Aloe Vera and Essential Oil Body Wash
This is another good all-natural body wash specially suitable for sensitive or irritated skin. Few my friends and even my sister has quite sensitive skin and they just don’t like market bought body wash. They have been using this recipe as far as I remember. This is not my own recipe, this recipe actually belongs to my grand mother. She used to grow aloe vera in her garden and make her gel fresh and use it for several purposes. I being a bit lazy, prefer to buy ready made aloe vera gel.
- Suitable For: Sensitive and Irritated skin.
- Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup aloe vera gel
- 1/4 cup liquid castile soap
- 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
- 10 drops of essential oil (peppermint or eucalyptus or any of your preferred ones)
- Process to Make and Use
- Combine aloe vera gel and jojoba oil in a bowl.
- Slowly add castile soap while stirring.
- Add essential oils and transfer the mixture to a bottle.
- Shake well before each use and apply as needed.
- Apply few drops on loofah or directly on skin.
- Benefits
- Aloe vera is known for its soothing and healing properties, ideal for calming irritated skin. Jojoba oil helps balance the skin’s natural oils without clogging pores.
- Aloe Vera is also known for its skin tightening and soothing properties and I can see its direct impact on my sister’s skin who is 40+. She has been using it for few years.
- Aloe vera body wash has been used for ages for its anti-aging from ages because of its hydrating, nourishing, protective, antibacterial, and regenerating properties.
You can adjust the quantity based on your preference or need as my sister doesn’t like much lather so she reduces the quantity of liquid soap by half and it works well for her.
All-Natural Body Wash – Oatmeal and Honey Body Wash
A quick and easy remedy. I don’t even make it and keep it in fridge. I make this on the go and use it. Though its suitable for sensitive and irritated skin and I have very normal skin but I still love it.
Again this recipe was not invented by me, my mom had been using this from the time we were very young. She passed it to me and my sister when we had our kids. This is a regular body wash recipe in my house. There have been several instances that even my partner ended up using it may be just to give it a try or just to get the feel of it. He has never told me but I know that he likes the after effect of it as I have seen him reusing it several other time… just being typical man.
- Suitable For: Sensitive and Irritated skin.
- Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup ground oats – I use any rolled oats available in my pantry.
- 1/3 cup liquid castile soap – Use the one which is gentle on skin.
- 1/4 cup honey – Honey is a very important ingredient for this recipe and Oats makes the skin a bit dry and honey have natural moisture to balance it out.
- 1 teaspoon almond oil – I like adding few drops of almond oil for extra moisturizer and nourishment.
- Process to Make and Use
- Grind oats into a fine powder using a blender. This step is optional, if you are comfortable putting mushy stuff on your body, you can directly soak the oats in to honey, oil and soap.
- Mix ground oats with castile soap, honey, and almond oil.
- Store in a bottle and shake well before each use.
- Benefits
- Oatmeal soothes and gently exfoliates the skin which is a very important step in cleaning any dirt and to open the pores.
- Honey is an excellent source of moisturization.
- Almond oil provides additional nourishment, making this body wash perfect for calming sensitive skin.
I have even added coconut milk in the same recipe and it works well for me. There have been time, when I am in rush and I ended up soaking just oats directly from the packet without grinding them. Just use rolled oats not the steel cut oats as rolled oats are easier to soak and absorbs liquid much faster. Also I had to ensure that they become soft and mushy before using it. It also works very well and its easier to exfoliate and remove all dead skin. I like to use this body wash generally after a long outing or exposure to sun.
My younger one loves using this body wash specially after coming back from school, now days she mixes the ingredients by herself and use it. All the ingredients are natural, so I don’t have to worry about anything. Above is a picture of the body wash made by her.
All-Natural Body Wash – Green Tea and Aloe Body Wash
This is a very effective body wash specially after I have spent considerable amount of time in sun. Both Aloe vera and green tea helps in reducing redness, skin irritation, and swelling. As per the actual recipe, I need to mix matcha powder but as you all know me, I like to make things which are more doable, less time consuming and I will not get bored doing them, I use the normal tea bag and soak it in to little hot water and use that water in the recipe.
I haven’t tried this on my younger one as she doesn’t like the smell of green tea and would any day go with aloe vera and oatmeal body wash over this. But personally I like the refreshing feel and smell of this one.
- Suitable For: Oily and acne-prone skin.
- Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup brewed green tea (cooled) or you can use Match powder if you like little thick consistency.
- 1/4 cup aloe vera gel
- 1/2 cup liquid castile soap
- A few drops of tea tree oil
- Process to Make and Use
- Brew green tea and let it cool. If you are using Matcha powder, you can mix few spoons of it in the hot water. Mix it well and ensure that there are no lumps left and let it cool.
- Mix it with aloe vera gel and castile soap.
- Add tea tree oil and transfer to a bottle.
- Shake well before each use.
- Benefits
- Green tea is rich in antioxidants and helps reduce inflammation, while aloe vera soothes and hydrates.
- Tea tree oil adds antibacterial properties, making this body wash excellent for acne-prone skin.
- Green tea is an excellent source of controlling the amount of oil our skin produces resulting in lesser acne.
One of my friend has sensitive skin and this body wash doesn’t suit her as she is allergic to green tea and it causes redness and itchiness in her skin. I personally don’t use this bodywash much as my younger one is not fond of the smell but there are several of my friends who swear by this amazing results of this.
You can try by putting the boiled and cooled green tea on your hand for few days and you can add other stuff based on your preference if you like the smell and also once you are sure that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients.
All-Natural Body Wash – Citrus and Honey Body Wash
This one is my all-time favorite. Extremely quick to make and gives a very pleasant smell which lasts almost the whole day. After using this I feel fresh and don’t even need to use any perfume. It has natural freshness and an amazing feel-good factor. I have two versions of this particular body wash. One is the standard recipe which you can get from anywhere on the internet and the other one is my personalized favorite recipe which you will find very easy to use and I can assure you that you will also fall in love with.
Let me give you the standard recipe first as there might be some users who would prefer to go via straight route instead of taking shortcut like me.

- You are all set to go.
- Benefits
- Honey moisturizes and soothes the skin.
- Citrus oils brighten and refresh and also gives amazing refreshing smell.
- Almond oil adds extra hydration, making this body wash perfect for rejuvenating the skin.
This is my go to body wash if I don’t have available at home or running short of time. There have been times when I have asked my younger one to make just to let her enjoy the making things on her own. You should see the happiness on her tiny face. She gets all excited and will showoff to anyone and everyone.
Yes she does make a mess in the kitchen but cleaning up that mess is not much of a work compare to the look on her face and excitement in her voice.
I can vouch for this body wash, several of my extended family members, friends have tried this and I think, this is the one which is most popular. But please note that in my personalized recipe I don’t use any liquid soap, hence there will not be any leather and I am ok with that. But there are some friends who don’t like any body wash without any lather. They just add 1-2 spoon of castile soap in my shortcut recipe and it works just fine. But as we are using fresh juice, you can’t keep this for longer duration. This will last only up to a day or two in the fridge.
If you analyze your wastebasket, you can easily see the plastic tubes, bottles, and boxes for various products like cleansers, body wash, moisturizers, etc. Since moving to these natural homemade products, I hardly have any plastic waste from my bathroom. I still have some small boxes and carry honey and oatmeal almost everywhere I travel. It’s very easy to mix them with a little hot water, and my body wash is done in just a few minutes.
These homemade body washes are easy to make, environmentally friendly, and tailored to different skin types. They also provide a great alternative to commercial products which are loaded with harmful chemicals.
Very important note, I use all these all-natural body wash recipes on my face too and have been using it from past several years. Sometimes I feel its better to use the same product on all body parts as its more convenient and time saving. Because my products are made from all-natural ingredients, It has never harmed me but actually protected my skin from all the harmful impact of chemicals and industry processed products. I am really thankful to my family to help me in supporting these specially during the initial stage when I didn’t have perfect recipes and was trying and testing out things.
It also helps in meeting my objective of living more sustainability. It’s not just living my life sustainably but I also want to leave the earth in a better condition for my kids and grandkids. I may not be living life 100% eco-friendly way but I am doing what I can consistently and trying to impart the same values to my kids.
I explain sustainable eco-friendly living to both my kids and even to their friends. To set an example I try my best to have all birthday parties, get get-togethers as eco-friendly as possible. You can check out my post” 10 Brilliant Zero Waste Event Ideas for a Greener Future” for more details.
I am sure, there might not be anything new in my recipes and you can get all of them from google but these are my tried and tested recipes and not only me but my mother and my younger one have been using them from several years. I write only about the products and recipes which I have tested personally and used for a while, so you can be sure of what you are going to get.
Its possible that you might be allergic to certain items so I would recommend to do a small patch test before applying on bigger area or face.
