Series 4 – How to Reduce Plastic Waste While Traveling: A Guide for Eco-Conscious Travelers

Welcome to the 4th post of the series on reducing plastic waste in daily life. In this post, I will focus on tips and tricks used by me to reduce plastic waste while traveling.

Traveling can be a fantastic adventure, but it often comes with a hefty price tag for the environment—especially when it comes to plastic waste. In this post, I will explain all practical tips to reduce plastic waste while traveling and help you become a more eco-conscious traveler.

I had lived my life with loads of disposable plastic and now I try my best to use it as little as possible. In the past decade every time I travel, I am using less and less plastic and my plastic waste has almost reduced by 70-80% from my initial days. However, there is still a place to improve it and I am still working on it but I am still proud of my achievement.

During that time, I didn’t know the impact of my choices but I am sure it would have impacted the environment a lot. Now that I have started my eco-friendly sustainable lifestyle journey, I am taking all precautions to reduce plastic waste.

Reduce Plastic Waste While Traveling- Understanding Plastic Waste in Travel

Most of the plastic pollution comes through single-use items such as water bottles, plastic bags, and food packaging. There are several sustainable alternatives available. By adopting these sustainable alternatives, I have minimized my plastic waste. In this post are some eco-friendly travel tips for plastic waste reduction.

Keep inventory of the plastic waste you are generating for a few trips and you will see that most of the waste comes from drink bottles, straws, shopping bags, food boxes, or the prepacked snacks we buy. Another component that contributes to plastic waste is the activities we do especially while traveling. I have changed most of these habits and it has reduced my plastic waste while traveling.

Reduce Plastic Waste While Traveling- Pack Smart to Reduce Plastic Waste

I’ve noticed something interesting: more than 60% of the plastic waste we create while traveling comes from everyday items we buy, especially things related to food and drinks. For example, think about all the plastic drink bottles, straws, and shopping bags we use.

After realizing this, I decided to be more mindful when I pack for any trip. I started researching whether it’s safe to drink tap water wherever I go. If not, I looked for options to refill my water bottle instead of buying single-use bottles every time someone is thirsty. Just this one change has probably saved thousands of bottles from ending up in the trash!

You can check out “Hydrate in Style: 7 Stainless Steel Water Bottles for Every Age” to pick your favorite stainless-steel water bottle.

Another essential item on my travel list is reusable shopping bags. When we stay at a vacation rental and cook some meals, we do need to pick up groceries. That’s when my trusty reusable bags come into play. A few years ago, I got some folding reusable bags, and they’ve become my lifeline. They travel with me everywhere! My kids even joke that I’m obsessed with them. 😊 I use these bags for all my fancy shopping too without any shame and make my kids look the other side…..

I also pack reusable or compostable cutlery sets, which are incredibly handy, especially when we grab food from food trucks. I always ask the vendors to serve our meals directly in our cutlery instead of using their disposable plastic utensils. This simple habit helps us cut down on plastic waste and ensures that no harmful chemicals seep into our food.

Making these small changes not only contributes to a cleaner environment but also keeps us healthier. It’s amazing how little adjustments can make such a big difference!

When preparing for your trip, consider how to pack to reduce plastic waste while traveling. Bring a reusable water bottle, metal straws, and cloth shopping bags. These small changes can make a big difference in cutting down on single-use plastics.

Reduce Plastic Waste While Traveling- Choose Sustainable Accommodations

Before I book a stay at any hotel or Airbnb, I always check if they support sustainable and eco-friendly practices. This is important to me. There are a few key things I pay close attention to:

First, I look at the hygiene products they provide. I prefer places that don’t use those small plastic bottles for shampoo, conditioner, and liquid soap. Instead, I like to see dispensers installed in the bathroom. This simple change can help reduce a lot of plastic waste.

Reduce Plastic Waste While Traveling- Opt for eco-friendly accommodations

Next, I check the type of cutlery they use. I make sure that all the cutlery in the hotel or Airbnb is either reusable or compostable.

I also consider how they handle laundry. I want to know what methods they use to wash and dry their linens and towels. Sustainable practices here can make a big difference.

Lastly, I look into their transport options. I prefer accommodations that offer bicycles for getting around, especially since many resorts are quite large. Having bicycles makes it easier to travel between activities, and restaurants without needing a car, helping in reducing air pollution.

By choosing places that prioritize these eco-friendly practices, I feel good about my travel choices and contribute to a healthier planet.

Reduce Plastic Waste While Traveling- Carry Your Own Snacks

Packing snacks in reusable containers not only helps you avoid plastic packaging but also saves money. Look for bulk options in your local grocery store, and fill up your containers before your trip. This is a great way to reduce plastic waste while traveling.

My favorite snacks to pack are chicken cheese sandwiches, simple vegetable rolls or sandwiches, boiled eggs, homemade nutrient bars, crackers, and Iced drinks can be made well in advance and can be taken straight from the fridge.

Reduce Plastic Waste While Traveling- Make Conscious Dining Choices

I make sure to do my research on almost all the restaurants for all the places we plan to visit. I will make a list of almost all restaurants, and small eating places that follow sustainable eco-friendly practices like composting the leftover food, etc.

Most restaurants don’t provide eco-friendly containers to carry the leftover food, so I ensure to carry my folding silicon food container to carry leftover food to ensure no single-use item gets used.

Reduce Plastic Waste While Traveling- Be Mindful of Activities

I try my best to choose places nearby where I can go by bus, car, or train and avoid flights. If I have to take a flight, I try to take the lesser carbon-emitting flights though cost also matters.

Participate in eco-friendly activities during your travels. Look for local tours that emphasize sustainability and avoid those that contribute to plastic waste. Instead of a speed boat, I opt for no-fuel kayaking which doesn’t cause any pollution, and instead of cars opt for bicycles if possible.

I opt for local tours like fruit picking, and simply resting on the beach or playing games with family. All these activities don’t cost anything and also help in family bonding. Nowadays almost all the places offer eco-friendly tours, I generally opt to go for these too.

This not only benefits the environment but also enhances my travel experience, I get to see the hidden gems with the help of locals instead of just visiting those touristy places where everyone goes.
